BETH S. KANE, M.S.W., LCSW, DBTC, CRMT, CCH, CHTR
I consider it truly a privilege to do the work I do, and I’m excited to watch my clients grow, find success, and heal. Together, we dive deep and make the changes you need to find your joy, spirit, and self again. I love hearing from my former clients as they go forward on their own path leaving the anxiety, fear and depression behind them. I celebrate each and every win with them along the way!
When you come in to work with me, I want you to feel as welcome and comfortable as you can. I know firsthand how hard coming in for that first session can be, and I don't believe counseling needs to feel clinical, cold and impersonal. After all, our focus is working as a team - you and I. My clients have described me as “warm, laid back and compassionate”, and I offer that to anyone who walks through my door.
Bio & Personal Story
I've lived at the Jersey shore my entire life and am married to Kevin. We have a wonderful son who loves to challenge me with complex math videos, just for fun, and someday I hope to be able to figure them out! Our family also includes 3 rescued dogs and 1 cat (who makes sure the dogs know who the boss really is!). We've also been fortunate to have fostered several homeless animals who have enriched our lives with their love and patience.
Ever since I was a very little girl, I knew that my life would be dedicated to helping people. I had a strong sense this was my purpose on this planet. And although I don't practice Christian counseling, I was born and raised as a Christian which has led me to further explore and develop my own personal spiritual path, along with my more traditional work, which led me to further realize my intuitive strengths and energy healing practices integrating all of this into my work as my clients want. I also offer a truly holistic style that can incorporate yoga, dietary and additional supports.
Before I fully share my personal story, I’d ask you when considering working with a counselor to consider a few key points, ask them about their current training and experience in working with trauma, anxiety, stress and depression depending on what your needs are. The majority of therapists tend to fall into two camps - they are either newly out of school or very behind on the latest research and rely heavily on "talk therapy" and other outdated modalities of treatment. I also infuse humor into my treatment when appropriate to lighten up our work together when you need it.
I have listed my education, training and certifications below for easier reference.
My personal story of trauma, healing and life after healing - and how I hope it helps you...
I want to briefly share this so you know there is hope even if right now you feel there is no change in sight for you, and why I believe so completely that healing doesn't happen on just one level. I've been practicing this work since my very early-20s, and when I was in my early-30s I took a short hiatus to attend to my own well-being. I don't believe we can do this work effectively until we've fully dealt with our own life issues.
In my early-30s, I began experiencing flashbacks coming from a long-repressed history of sexual trauma that happened when I was a little girl. Along with them, I had non-stop panic attacks which fueled a period of depression. I took a break from my work to focus on my own healing. I believe we need to honor ourselves, loving ourselves first, in this way so we can be the best "us" for others. The healer must be healed first, and she can't always do it alone. It was the most difficult period in my life, feeling as if I was going to go "crazy" and not really understanding why. I did my own trauma work and with time, the panic, anxiety and depression stopped and lifted. I returned to work determined to help other women experiencing all of this with much deeper understanding.
Even though I was feeling better, there still felt like something was missing - like I said, I’m determined to end as much suffering, not just for me but for you too, as I can. I had engaged in traditional talk therapy, and while it helped, I found myself always reflecting back on that time over what could have helped get to the stuff I still held onto? When I resumed my work, I found that piece missing for my clients too. This started my training and certification with DBT. What I love most about DBT is that it offers actual tools, concrete skills, that we can readily practice and use to deal with these issues - and most importantly, they work!
A few years later I was introduced to Reiki, and I had another healing crisis. This time, I could work through it, but it was very clear to me that I was still holding onto the energy of what happened so long ago as a child. I felt such disappointment because I thought I’d put all that behind me. But there was no denying it, because I felt it not only in my energetic field, but within my body itself. Around this same time, so much research was coming about supporting how trauma is experienced and held in the body. Our experiences can, and do, affect our very DNA. I became a certified Reiki Master Teacher developing over time my own spiritual understanding, and nuisances, to energy healing and opened myself up to my intuitive strengths as a medium and intuitive healer. I also became trained in yoga-informed trauma work which I incorporate into my practice for those clients seeking a this approach.
A woman on a mission, I knew there was even more to healing trauma, anxiety, fear and depression. This is how I embarked on the training for the Integrative Wellness Practitioner certification for mental health I now hold. It's through that course, along with countless hours in other training and doing research, that I found how food, body rhythms, herbs and other approaches can absolutely affect our mental wellness, most especially mood. There are so many natural gifts Nature provides us to heal us!
So, I’m offering you too the experience, knowledge, and wisdom I've obtained to help you step back into the feeling of confidence, safety and trust you once held within yourself. If you're ready to do the work, I'm ready to work with you. I know how scary that first step is - but I promise you, I'm not scary. I only work clients I feel are the best mutual fit. And if I don’t think I can serve you best, I’ll help you find someone who can. Because my first priority is always you.
All my very best always, Beth
